BQYC Youth Race Team Program
BQYC is in its 3rd year of running a dedicated youth racing program. The program focuses on racing single-handed boats. Youth weighing less than 130 lbs race Optimist Sailboats and those weighing greater than 130lbs race Laser sailboats. The Lasers are rigged with either a Radial rig or 4.7 rig dependent on weight and skill factors.
In 2016 BQYC hired World Class Racer & Coach Fede Donzino.
BQYC OPTIMIST HEAD COACH AND RACING PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
BQYC is proud to have Federico (Fede) Donzino join the 2016 sail training team as the OPTIMIST Head Coach working collaboratively with Kyle Sudds, Coach of the Laser team. Our Sail Training Instructors lead by Head Instructor Curtis Kennedy and Junior Instructors Thor Render, Ava Guse and Molly Weidenborner are keen to learn from his expertise as they develop the sailing schools and their own accomplishments towards coaching.
Fede is a sailing coach with almost ten (10) years of international sailing experience, and over three (3) years of international level amateur sail coaching experience.
As an accomplished competitive sailor, Fede has raced in the Optimist International Class and 420 International Class. In the Optimist Class, he competed in Argentina, Peru, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic, with his team wining first place at the Team Race National Championship in 2007, and both the Corbeta Patagon Championship and the San Isidoro Labrador Team Race Cup in 2009. In the 420 International Class, Fede had championship wins in the Armada Argentina Championship in 2011 and the Winter Championships Y.C.O. in both 2011 and 2012.
As a coach, Fede has effected positive results for many international yacht and boating clubs around the world. In 2013 and 2014, he ran Intensive Optimist Training Courses for Club Nautico San Isidoro, in Argentina and at Club Nautico Albatros in Argentina respectively. In 2014 he also coached in the 420 Class at International Clinic, Argentina. In 2015, Fede ran coaching programs in the Optimist and Laser Class for Youth Sailing Curacao, and also ran a program in the 420 Class for Yacht Club Ancon in Peru. By the end of 2015, he led the Curacao team to a sixth (6) place finish at the Youth Worlds in Paracas, Peru.
The BQYC sail training committee is working closely with Fede to develop our instructors in coaching experience and our race team in their development. The BQYC sail training committee is dedicated to building a youth sail training program for leisure and for competitive racing.

The Youth Race Team Program runs for 10 weeks, starting the middle of June. Sailors practice Mondays and Thursdays, from 4-7pm and on Saturday afternoons they race in the BQYC dinghy regatta series (when not at out of town regattas). The Saturday dinghy regatta is an excellent opportunity to gain racing experience in a regatta format with on-the-water coaching. Testing their skills among seasoned and beginner, youth and adult dinghy racers in a friendly, competitive learning environment is a highlight.
Our coaches are seasoned sailors who strive to teach our racers skills required on the racecourse. These skills include: Starting techniques, Upwind sailing, Downwind sailing and Navigating windward and leeward marks, racing rules and Boat handling.
While the Youth Race Team is focused on competition, it is not a strict requirement to attend “Out of Town Regattas”. This is however encouraged. It will be the intention of the team, at the discretion of the coaches and team manager, to attend as many out of town regattas as possible. In 2015, the Optimist racers attended the Steerers regatta in Port Credit, the Four Sisters regatta in Port Credit, the CORK Optimist regatta in Kingston, the Quebec Championship in Montreal and Fall CORK in Kingston.
Fees for “Out of Town “ regatta registrations, regatta coaching and accommodations at regattas are not included in the program fees. BQYC will transport charter boats to regattas attended by BQYC racers with coach accompaniment. Parent volunteers for regattas and chaperoning is encouraged and appreciated.
To join the race team, sailors are required to have achieved a minimum level of CanSail 2 or above/equivalent and have a keen interest in racing.
